BALLOONING
Out
of the world experiences are possible from
the balloons. Pilanesberg game reserves in
the Northwest offer the best hot-air
balloon panoramas. You can majestically
drift over the savanna and watch for big
game. The Winelands of the Western Cape
offers another exotic vision. Sipping a
glass of wine while floating over the
vineyards is indeed a pleasure.
Bird
Watching
Nature has blessed South Africa with a wide variety of the
winged population. There are many species
that are exclusive to this country. The
best areas for bird watching are Ndumo and
Mkhuze in KwaZulu-Natal, the bush savanna
of Mpumalanga and the Northern Province,
and the Okavango delta in Botswana.
Fishing
Sdouth Africa has a long and lovely coastline stretching to
2500 kilo meters(1550 miles). Anglers have
a wide choice amid the rock and surf. At
the Cape there is the confluence of the
warm Indian Ocean and the cold Atlantic.
This is responsible for the very high
concentration of game fish along the coast
of the country. Marlin is a great
attraction. License is not needed for
fishing on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. The
most popular time here is from June to
September. License or permits are required
in certain beaches along the Cape coast.
More details are available with the South
African Deep Sea Angling Association
(tel. 27/12/809-0978).Trout fishing
is also extremely popular, particularly in
the Dullstroom area (Mpumalanga), the
Drakensberg (KwaZulu-Natal), and the
mountains of the Western Cape. There is
great scope for the Spear wielding
enthusiast too. For more information,
contact SAUU.
Golf
Just as everything else in the
African continent, even the Golf courses
here are exotic. You do not know when you
may bump into wild animals. Of course, not
every where: but keep look out if you are
in a golf course in the province of
Mpumalanga and the Northern Province, in
particular. Courses in KwaZulu-Natal and
the Western Cape are usually very
beautiful and incorporate the natural
environment. Gary Player, the world
champion is a native of Johannesburg and
he has designed some of the best courses. "Kloofing" trail is the highlight among all the
trails on which you follow a river through
a mountain gorge (kloof), swimming and
clambering your way out.
Hiking
South Africa has diverse varieties of hiking trails-suited
for the weak hearted as well as for the
hard grinder. The country has the most
comprehensive trails network in Africa;
from short rambles to tough two-week hikes
covering everything from fragrant
botanical gardens, indigenous forests,
savanna, and fynbos-clad mountains to
uninhabited coastlines. there are trails
that traverse through game reserves where
one is likely to encounter big game on
foot, the best of which are the Umfolozi
trails in KwaZulu-Natal. Most of the best
hiking trails are in the Western Cape and
KwaZulu-Natal, as well as in Mpumalanga
and the Northern Province.
SAILING
The winds average 15 to 20 knots and the yachting facilities
are excellent. Offshore sailing requires
that you belong to a recognized yacht
club. The Sailing Association can furnish
you more details about local harbor
regulations.
WINDSURFING
The most exhilarating windsurfing spots are in the
Scarborough and Kommetjie area on Cape
Town's western seaboard, off the Cape
Point coast, and at Langebaan on the West
Coast, where the wind comes up almost
every afternoon.
